Journalism Teaching

Dinesh C Sharma is currently engaged in translating his long years of journalism experience into journalism education modules for the benefit of media training centers in India and abroad. His domain expertise is in designing tailor-made courses in areas including emergence of new media, role of a journalist in the convergence era, science and technology reporting, environment journalism and development writing. He is well versed in tools of online teaching as well.

Dinesh has designed and taught two eight-weeks courses on “Reporting on Social and Development Issues” during 2004 and 2005. The course examines media's role in society, its potential in development, weak points, and the role that practitioners can and should play, ever mindful of their ability as a catalyst of change. The stated objectives of the course are to sensitize journalists on developmental issues and the strong role media can play in promoting development; and to develop special skills needed to identify and write developmental stories and need for long-term follow-up as development is a continuous process.

The center runs a full post-graduation program in journalism for working journalists and media professionals from Asia and the Pacific. It was envisioned as a training and education venue that does not resemble and replicate existing journalism schools in the region. The Center is unique in that its students are working journalists from the region and it has an international faculty. In the Center's course offerings, theory is taught side by side with skills courses. From its inception to the end of December 2004, the Center would have conducted 38 online courses, including some hybrid courses. The countries that have been represented in our online classes are: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Cook Island, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu. So far teachers have come from the UK, US, India, the Philippines, Australia.

In India, Dinesh has conducted courses in science reporting for radio journalists and broadcasters at the Prasar Bharti Staff Training College , and delivered invited talks at the Indian Institute of New Media and Journalism , Bangalore, Indian Institute of Mass Communication , New Delhi and other journalism schools.
